My MISSION
Life as We Know It exists to create approachable, engaging, literacy-rich science resources that help students develop the skills to understand science—not simply memorize it—while giving teachers high-quality materials they can realistically use in their classrooms.
The Goal
I believe every student can learn science when they're given the right way to do it. Many students come into our classes with the mindset that they aren't good at science because they haven't been given the tools to succeed or enjoy the subject in the past. I believ that the resources we integrate into our classrooom should be rigorous but I also believe they should be realistic for mixed-level students and students that are not neccesarily going to enter the STEM fields. Students need to understand why the information matters to them and they need to see how the skills they are developing will benefit them in the long run. The goal when creating Life as We Know it was to help other teachers integrate these concepts and make science more accessible for more students.Â
THE PROBLEM
In my classrooms throughout my teaching career, I have noticed several recurring trends:
I felt like I was always struggling to find science resources that met my students needs so I decided to start making my own!
Critical Thinking
Students are not prepared to analyze or think critically about scientific text.
Diverse Literacy
There are huge differences in reading levels, math literacy, and academic confidence in any given classroom.
Active Learning
Memorization is not working because they aren't taking it a step further to actually think about the information.
Resource Scarcity
There aren't enough resources that help enforce reading and math skills for students at lower levels.
MY BELIEFS ABOUT SCIENCE EDUCATION
Science is for everyone
Students don't need to enter your classroom already confident in science to succeed.
Literacy Belongs in the Science Classroom
Reading, interpreting evidence, analyzing data, understanding terminology, and communicating ideas are part of doing science.
Rigor doesn't have to mean inaccessible
Materials can challenge students while still providing enough support for mixed-level classrooms.
Equity in Science
We believe every student, regardless of classroom budget, deserves access to professional-grade exploration tools.
RESOURCES
I create resources with one goal in mind: helping students understand what they are learning, not just memorize enough information to pass a test. My resources combine science content with literacy, data analysis, critical thinking, and real-world connections to make challenging concepts more approachable. Everything is designed with mixed-level classrooms in mind, so students can be challenged without feeling overwhelmed.
Built for Students
Not every student walks into a science classroom already confident in science (or even in reading or math!). That shouldn't keep them from being successful. My resources are designed to give students opportunities to practice the skills they need to make sense of science, whether that means breaking down unfamiliar terminology, finding evidence in a reading, interpreting a graph, or applying what they've learned to a real-world situation. The goal isn't to remove the challenge. It's to give students a way into it.
made for real classrooms
As a classroom teacher, I know a great resource isn't very helpful if it takes an hour to prepare. I create materials that I would actually want to use in my own classroom: clear, engaging, academically meaningful, and easy to implement. Whether you need independent work, a sub plan, extra practice, review, or just a different way to teach a concept, these resources are made to save teachers time without sacrificing meaningful learning.
